The Debate Itself

The ‘debate’ over copyright has spawned into a separate entity, at times entirely removed from the suffering creators and industries themselves, its warring ‘intelligentsia’ including representatives from a diverse range of fields to whom the argument is sometimes only obscurely relevant. Most spotlighted in the debate has been the music industry, having bore the full brunt of the public’s en-masse infringement of copyright laws. The ‘debate’ involves a ‘free or fee’ type discussion about consumer-ethics and whether or not all users of P2P networks (the very servers providing illegal appropriation of MP3 files) should be fined/incarcerated; or alternatively, whether a new consumer model should be introduced accomodating (as opposed to resisting) this technological advent, supplying consumers with the means to bypass distributors in the acquisition of ‘content’.

  1. I love your writing Sam, it's so informative.
The copyright debate sounds like, from this particular post, that it doesn't know whether to slam down on these infringements or embrace and slightly alter the illegal uses to make them more.. World friendly, where people aren't getting ripped off.
I'm just wondering.. What is your opinion on this specific topic (the music downloading scheme)?

    K. I just have read your topic.. And your topic was really good. K K
I think copyright is the biggest problem in countries where internet infrastructure is good because currently, many people downloaded any pop cultures thorugh internet so.. if the speed of internet is fast, many users will try to download it...Anyway... It was just my opinion..

  4. Hi Sam, well I have to agree, there is a lot of information, this topic itself well is quite close to me, since I have found referencing to quite a chore, although I have to say, I would hate it, if some one stole my idea without giving me some kind of recognition. On the other hand, if we were referring to music, videos and games, for me I think its great that its been downloaded since they make enough money as it is. ^_^

Nice topic, also feel free to comment on my blog, is as follows:

  5. Hey Sam,
there are probably a few of us in class (admit it people) who after spending $$$$$ on music and movies decided enough is enough, and converted to being a receiver of 'pirated' material without a thought to the artists loss of income to the artists/industry. Technically, it is stealing, morally people don't give two squats because the content is free.
However, I disagree with Farishs comment "they make enough money as it is" hehe, come on Farish these people are entitled to earn their living just as much as everybody else ^_^
Very informative and colourful writing with an appropriate amount of visual effects.

  6. hey sam,

I found your topic really interesting.. yes it's true people copyright when they can but i guess like others have stated, If i were "a creator" of something i would atleast want my share on the acknowlgement and also the $$ lol. and people taking the pirated material instead of buying the actual thing would actually get me all hot headed and red as a tomato haha!

I guess our biggest problem is the internet! wasn't life so much easier before it?? haha

    Nice Job.

  7. Hi,
A good topic to think on, great choice.

Back in the days when there's still dial up people buy CDs and it was alright since dial up was not that expensive.
But now, expensive internet plus buying music or videos just seems like too much extra.
On the other hand, if people don't steal, the world will be in peace lol

  8. Hey Sam,
Apart from an interesting choice in topic I feel you've proven your point well. I agree with Belinda, not only people in class but majority of the people who listen to music these days downloads, and becomes an alias to piracy. It is necessary to curb it but that would require quite an effort from quite a few people. Anyway you've put your point across well, good job.
